An Important Update on Navigable AI: Fine-Tuning Support and Platform Shutdown
Today we are sharing something difficult but important. Navigable AI will be shutting down on August 31, 2026.
This decision did not come lightly. It comes from a real shift in the infrastructure we built on, and from a broader change in the AI landscape that has been accelerating faster than most people anticipated. We want to be fully transparent about what happened, why, and what it means for you.
What Triggered This Decision
On May 7, 2026, OpenAI announced significant changes to its self-serve fine-tuning platform. Organizations that had not previously run fine-tuning jobs can no longer create new training jobs. From July 2, 2026, that restriction tightens further for existing users. By January 6, 2027, even active existing customers will no longer be able to create new fine-tuning jobs at all. Navigable AI's fine-tuning capability was built on top of this API. With it going away, we can no longer support the core feature that made our platform distinctive.
Rather than pivot hastily or offer a diminished product, we made the call to wind down the platform responsibly, give our customers enough time to transition, and be honest with everyone about what is happening and why.
Why Fine-Tuning Was the Right Bet at the Time
When we built Navigable AI, fine-tuning was not a nice-to-have. It was the most reliable way to solve a real problem: getting an AI agent to actually understand your product.
Early LLMs had small context windows. GPT-3 launched with just 2,048 tokens. Even as models improved, context windows of 4K or 8K tokens were the norm. That created a hard ceiling. You could not simply dump your documentation, your support articles, and your domain knowledge into a prompt and expect the model to reason well about it. There was not enough room.
Fine-tuning changed that. By training a model directly on your product data, you could bake that domain knowledge into the model itself, rather than fighting a context limit every time a user asked a question. For product-specific AI agents, it was the most precise and reliable path to accurate, consistent answers.
That is what Navigable AI was built around: making fine-tuning accessible, measurable, and trustworthy for teams without a dedicated ML team.
The AI Landscape Has Shifted Under All of Us
Here is the honest truth: the ground moved.
The context window numbers available in 2026 would have seemed like science fiction just a few years ago. GPT-5 handles 400K tokens. Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 reached a full 1 million token context window at standard pricing in March 2026, with no long-context surcharge. Gemini 3.1 Pro supports 1 million tokens as well. Meta's Llama 4 Maverick sits at 1 million tokens. And Gemini's experimental builds have pushed toward 2 million.
For most product use cases, that changes the calculus entirely.
The reason we built around fine-tuning was that context windows were too small to hold your product knowledge. When context windows grow to 400K, 1 million, even beyond, you can fit an enormous amount of documentation, Q&A pairs, and domain knowledge directly into a single prompt or retrieval layer. The constraint we were solving for is no longer as acute for most teams.
The industry has recognized this too. OpenAI's own strategic direction confirms it: the company is steering developers toward prompt engineering, RAG, and orchestration over training. As one analysis noted, OpenAI prefers developers shape model behaviour through prompts and retrieval before reaching for training, because more of the product logic staying inside OpenAI's managed runtime gives them more control over reliability and model upgrades. Fine-tuning is being positioned as a niche tool for very specific enterprise use cases, not the general-purpose customization lever it once was.
This is not a bad thing for the industry. It is a sign that the base models have gotten dramatically better. But it does mean the problem Navigable AI was originally solving has been partly absorbed by the infrastructure itself.
What Happens Next
Fine-tuning is no longer available on Navigable AI effective immediately.
The full platform will shut down on August 31, 2026. You have until that date to export any data, configurations, or outputs you need.

What We Learned
Building Navigable AI taught us a lot about what trustworthy AI actually requires. Accuracy is not a feature, it is a baseline expectation. Evaluation matters more than training. Grounding responses in your product knowledge, rather than letting a model guess, is what separates useful AI from frustrating AI.
Those principles are not going away. The tools and infrastructure change, but the need for AI that gives your users correct, reliable, consistent answers is only growing.
